about

Reggae Roast come correct once again, this time joining forces with one of the UKs leading Dancehall Stars Gappy Ranks.

My Selecta is the latest single from Reggae Roast’s forthcoming More Fire! LP which features world famous artists such as Horace Andy, Johnny Clarke, Mr WIlliamz & Soom T.

Gappy Ranks, a Dancehall Star in his own right has collaborated with UK legend Shy FX accumulating 10s of millions of streams. My Selecta is Gappy’s story of the influences that led to him becoming the sing-jay don he is today. Describing life as a kid growing up in West London the song depicts all the things that led Gappy on his musical journey.

The hard hitting riddim from Reggae Roast samples the classic Rocksteady track Midnight Hour by the Silvertones from Trojan Records. Revamping the riddim with modern production techniques, a heavier dancehall baseline and live Sax from UB40s sax player Adriano Rossetti Reggae Roast have create a classic sounding Reggae / Dancehall crossover track.

lyrics

Town, oh oh!
Operator, my selector

Now everybody bus a gunshot
Put up your hand if ya love that
Selecter the tune haffi playback
Ca it sound like way back, ok!

The ranking coming from a generation
When artist lyrics did full a education
The leaders of the world of the united nation
Never want fi hear di message pon di radio station
Now as a yout me have a reggae reputation
Origin West Indian but me born a England
Father Jamaican momma a Dominican
Whole heap a bad boy in a me conversation
Now in a pirate school me get me reputation
Fi bang pon table everyday and sing song
Never want play football, no want play ping pong
The invisible microphone we have in a me hand
And me glad me fi grow up on some studio one
Dig deep in a me father record collection
Me daddy said a youth deh a go be someone
So me go a stonebridge go check the rough cut band
After school in a studio with bare rastaman
Dem a bun dem chalice and hold a meditation
Dem days you want bust you haffi come a London
Soundboy nah know the history nah the foundation
From me in a me mother belly we nah love satan
Me used to read from genesis to revelation
But many night me end up in a police station
Me know say music are me life its not my occupation

Settle down my selector, come down
Operator
Mix me down proper, ok!
Entertainer

Now everybody bus a gunshot
Put up your hand if ya love that
Selecter the tune haffi playback
Ca it sound like way back, ok!

The ranking coming straight from the dancehall
When TDK tapes run the market stall
I grow up when every sound there’s too much name fi call
Me favorite artist poster pin pon me wall
And me know every musician will live local
Some of me gangster friend them have good vocal
But me never love the music for money total
Some come in a di business fi get more gal
You know long me in a dis ca me grow loyal
Me family was poor me never was spoil
Give thanks to what me have we never in denial
Never inherent nothing cos me never royal
No me say gwan ranking because you’re international
Don’t change for a minute, don't move unusual
Gwan mix up the lyrics in a every plural
Stay fresh like the water in a di mineral
And know say the most high give you approval
